Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout

Zacuto’s Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout 2012 was 11 months in the making, testing nine HD video cameras. The cameras tested ranged from the $650 Apple iPhone and the $900 Panasonic Lumix GH2 up to the higher end pro cameras such as the Canon 7D, Canon C300, and Sony FS100. Also included in the shootout were the higher priced pro cameras such as the Red Epic, Arri Alexa and Sony CineAltas costing in the tens of thousands of dollars.

The results may surprise you as they discovered, “It’s not the gear that determines greatness anymore, it’s you!”. The Panasonic GH2 faring the best among an audience of filmmakers which included Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola. When you see the film clips taken with the Apple iPhone, you will probably agree.

As Michael Rosenblum states in his book iPhone Millionaire, ” As video comes to the web and smart phones and tablets, you can be pretty sure that the majority of what you are going to see on those screens is also going to be video”. He also believes that small digital cameras will replace traditional camera crews, and laptop edits will replace edit suites.
