Jim Marshall The Godfather of Rock & Roll Photography
Jim Marshall photographed some of the biggest legends in the music and entertainment industry.
He was the chief photographer at the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock, the only photographer given backstage access at the Beatles’ last concert, the only photographer to squeeze Janis Joplin and Grace Slick into a single frame.
Jim Marshal took many of his famous photographs with a Leica M4 and almost never left home without itn fact, in 2005 Marshall teamed up with Leica Camera, Inc. to create the Leica Camera / Jim Marshall Scholarship Photo Contest, open to high school and college students pursuing a major or minor in photography. It was a photo contest that gave the winner $2500 and a new Leica M7 with Leica 35mm f/2 ASPH lens. It was a team effort with Leica Camera in giving young aspiring photographers a chance to succeed.
His special rapport and trust with musicians gave him the opportunity of gettings shots no one else even attempted.
